Naturally we would like to nurture relationships with local firms of solicitors in the hope that they will refer IP enquiries to us. If they telephone or e-mail with a brief enquiry, we would like to be seen as helpful and co-operative. At the same time, we do not wish to give away too much of our time or advice for free, if they do not then go on to refer the work to us to handle.
We need to explain that for liability reasons, if we are taking responsibility for representing/advising a client on any IP matter, then we will require direct contact with the client. Some solicitors may be reluctant to handle the work in this way. It is our aim to overcome this by reassuring them that we will refer any litigation or non-IP matters back to them.
