Now to the auger cores. This core shows a fine river silt that has built up. The silt has bands of black and specks of white within it’s makeup. The black bands are
from organic material that is breaking down, like reeds, suggesting fairly open water with a few reed plants growing. The white specs are calcareous build ups within the silt.
You should be able to see a gradation from the grey silts to the slightly more brown silts at the right hand side, this is showing a gradual change from one type of
environment to another. Each core tells a story of the Witham Valley.
This core shows a sharp boundary from grey silts with few reeds throughout to a very dense and fibrous layer of reed peat and silts.
This sequence shows a whole core, then a little closer look of the sedimentary layers within the core. Included in this core was a branch from a tree that had fallen
into the channel and then preserved.
